The intervention concerns adaptation of the existing sports facility in Pinerolo to host the men’s and women’s curling tournament during the Olympic Winter Games in 2006. The sports facility will be able to hold 3,000 spectators To try and maintain architectural unity in a building that was originally built with often contradictory interventions - laminated structure, roof in green steel, stairways and façade in coloured cement - intervention was done following two strategies: to make the east and south sides of the building more uniform and to “screen” the existing north and west side. On the east and south sides, where new buildings are planned, covering in aluminium panels are envisaged, with extensive use of large windows, especially on the east side. The same east façade that turns on the north and south sides is inclined towards the exterior and is fragmented by a large entrance arcade to the main hall. The south façade, treated with the same material, has three large iron stairways protruding from its structure that are necessary for evacuating the public. The rest of the building is hidden behind perforated panels that have the purpose of serving as a screen for the existing structure. A large sign with “PINEROLO ICE STADIUM” will be put up on the side facing the railway.
The light grey steel roof will serve to complete this building with many styles, taken in part from the industrial world, creating a real factory for sports, recreation and socialization.
