Modification and implementation of safety measures on the ex S.S. 589 in the Municipality of Pinerolo between the area of Porporata and the ex S.S. 23

The plan under review concerns work to adapt the Regional Road 'dei laghi di Avigliana' - the ex S.S. 589 transforming the current artery identified as a secondary extra-urban road - into a main extra-urban road in the section in the Municipality of Pinerolo. The main objective of the modification consists in removing several critical points regarding the circulation of traffic and the environment, present in the section concerned by the intervention. The purpose of the planned work is to:

  1. Reduce the pressure of urban, industrial and commercial activity on the current route of the ex-national road 589 turning into a motorway.
  2. Modify the carriageway to new traffic requirements
  3. Improve access to the main roads (mainly the ex S.S. 23)
  4. Complete the Pinerolo ring-road in the section south of the city
  5. Ensure functional access to the Olympic area and to the flyover crossing of Pinerolo

Thus, the outcome of the planned interventions will consist in the construction of a section of the artery with characteristics responding to the current functional and geometric standards for the construction of roads and, at the same time, compatible with the objectives of environmental quality expected for the structures concerned. The layout of the plan under review includes the following interventions and structures:

  • Roundabouts at the main junctions
  • Upgrading of the existing road surface with construction of new infrastructure
  • Intervention on the secondary roads concerned

The plan is divided into the following interventions:

  1. Porporata roundabout
  2. Upgrading of a section of the S.S. 589 with new railway flyover
  3. Roundabout and underpass in Corso Torino
  4. Upgrading of a section of the S.S. 23
  5. Roundabout at entry with ex S.S. 23
  6. Upgrading of a section of the Orbassano Road and access to intermodal parking
  7. Euroball roundabout
  8. Roundabout at entry to the Olympic Park
  9. Roundabout tollgate 30


Porporata roundabout
The crossroads level with the entry to the industrial zone will be modified by constructing a roundabout with an internal radius of 36m, in axis with the section being upgraded of the S.S. 589. To incorporate the roundabout, the existing road will have to be demolished and the road surface redone so that it is suitable with the entire upgrading plan of the S.S. 589. >
Upgrading of a section of the ex S.S. 589 with new railway flyover
In this section the construction of a new carriageway is planned over the existing one, with a width of 22m and two lanes in each direction and a central traffic divider. This intervention also calls for the modification of the railway flyover of the Torino-Pinerolo line.
Roundabout and underpass in Corso Torino
As the objective is to separate the course of the main road from the town structure, the plan proposes to construct the through road in an entrenchment so as to pass under the crossroads with Corso Torino, which will be built above ground level and will be made up of a roundabout with two lanes with an internal radius of 31m. It is planned to leave the section of the S.S. 589 that continues in the roundabout uncovered. In this way it will be necessary to construct two underpasses with a reduced of 10m. (parallel to the axis of the national road).The width should be more than the width of the road surface. Entry and exit to and from Corso Torino and to and from the through road is ensured by the lanes that continue at ground level and that direct the flow of vehicles to the roundabout.
Junction roundabout with the ex S.S.23
The objective is to allow the control and direct traffic flow in all directions: Sestriere (S.S. 23), Torino (S.S. 23), Buriasco, Vigone, Pancalieri (S.P. 129), Piossasco, Orbassano, Torino (S.S. 589), Pinerolo, town from the Poirino Road. Construction of a three-lane roundabout with an internal radius of 91m for directing traffic in the above mentioned directions. To incorporate the roundabout the existing flyover will have to be demolished and the road surface redone so that it is suitable with the entire upgrading plan for the S.S. 23. Construction of a viaduct composed of six spans (27.9m wide for the two side spans and 33m for the central ones), over the new roundabout in order to clear traffic on the ring road of all the other flow of traffic.
Olympic infrastructure
This part of the intervention includes: a junction roundabout on Corso Torino facing the Euroball building with a diameter of 33m; use of the internal road and the construction of parking areas for existing businesses with restructuring of internal road system; execution of a box structure facility in reinforced concrete for crossing the existing irrigation canal at the end of the PEC area and roundabout junction; construction of a roundabout for access to the Olympic Park near the Hotel Cavalieri with a diameter of 44m; upgrading of a section of the Orbassano Road with a modification of the carriageway to Category C1; construction of the roundabout called tollgate thirty near the level crossing on the Orbassano Road that will be suppressed by the RF1; construction of a new entrenched road internal road in the Olympic Park; an underpass in reinforced concrete near the Pinerolo-Torino railway line, already planned in function of the possibility of a third track; completion of the pedestrian passageway connecting the parking area of zone CE 6.1 with the Olympic sports facilities.
