The plan to modify the S.P. 161 of the Pellice Valley envisages the execution of work for the purpose of speeding up traffic between the Pellice Valley and the Pinerolo area as well as for increasing safety at several critical points along the route with one-off interventions. Currently the S.P. 161 is congested with heavy traffic, in particular during the morning and evening commuting hours when there is an intense flow of vehicles between the Pellice Valley and the industrial and commercial park of Pinerolo and Torino. These road conditions inevitably provoke slow downs and increase pollution along the entire road system. To a certain extent there are also problems of safety at numerous single-level junctions or at intersections of side or private roads with provincial road 161. The objective of the work is to address the problem and eliminate some of the critical situations illustrated above and to improve overall road conditions. Work can be divided into three types of intervention:

  1. Construction of a new road system in the territory of Bricherasio - Osasco for a new and more functional connecting artery and access road from the Pellice Valley to the Pinerolo area. The alternative route of Bricherasio arises from the need to lighten traffic currently using the S.P. 161, particularly in the section of San Secondo di Pinerolo - Bricherasio where the presence of numerous manufacturing plants and businesses located along the route cause frequent delays and/or dangerous turns in both directions. As part of the feasibility study carried out by TOROC and following the preliminary plan, several alternative routes to the connecting road between Cappella Merli and the town of Osasco were considered. The service lane proposed during the conference and indicated as the technical solution of the plan was elaborated further and defined during the final plan, identifying a route shared with the Municipal administration that is further away from existing farmhouses.
  2. Renewal and improvement of safety in the section of the ring road of Bricherasio between Km 5+500 and Km 7+000 with the construction of one-way side lanes serving the homes located along the road axis and roundabouts. The section called "alternative route of Bricherasio" is made up mainly of a new road axis that joins the existing/planned road system by means of two roundabouts, two overpasses to give continuity to the existing roads, a bridge over the Chiamonga stream and several secondary roads. The alternative road section is planned with a lane in each direction and a planned speed limit of between 60 and 100 Km/h. The two roundabouts planned are characterised by two lanes 3.75m wide, meaning that they maintain the same dimensions as those of the new axis, from a shoulder of 0.75m (internal) and one of 1.50m (external). As far as the overpasses on the Braide and Tirabrasse roads are concerned, the width of the roadway is variable, passing from 7.00m on the road structures until they join the current size of the road, which is around 4.00m. A width of 4.00m was also maintained for the secondary roads.
  3. Construction of roundabouts and one-off interventions along S.P. 161 at the critical junctions with the following works: - Pralafera roundabout in the Municipality of Luserna San Giovanni (Km 12+100); - Junction for the new Ice Palace in the Municipality of Torre Pellice (Km 14+150); - Widening of the bridge on the Rio Rospart in the Municipality of Villar Pellice (Km 18+800).
